Portsoy Salmon Bothy
Lovingly restored, this is a superb example of a combined icehouse with working and living accommodation which served Portsoy's salmon fishing industry. In its vaulted ground floor chambers you will learn about the salmon fishing industry, which was once far greater in volume and value than white fish. You will see where the men lived and worked and where ice was stored in a building which ensured natural refrigeration with its floors laid with sea cobbles upon bare earth.
The Bothy was built in 1834, and now operates as a museum displaying original, mainly maritime, artefacts many of which were used in the Salmon House in days of operation. The net loft now provides a multipurpose space, used for various activities, meetings, talks and demonstrations including art and photographic exhibitions and workshops.
What was the Bothy or sleeping quarters now houses a genealogy facility where people can carry out their own family history search on dedicated computers.
