We've got shopping in the bag!
What a relief… Banffshire towns still have their own retail identity!
We are very proud of tradition here on the Banffshire Coast and, while it is inevitable that the modern will merge with the old, you will be delighted to discover that our shopping experience is very focused on the individual and unique. You won't find sprawling malls or out-of-town retail complexes; on the Banffshire Coast the shopping experience is as memorable as the beautiful scenery.
Why not follow our Shopping Trail to find our hidden retail gems.
Although you will find some familiar High Street names dotted through our town centre, the independent store still reigns supreme here and if you need a shopping fix, you’ll be able to while away the hours browsing through gift shops, arts and craft studios and antiques centres. From shops that have been handed down through generations of the same family to brand new galleries run by bright young talents, you’ll be amazed at what we have to offer.
The market town of Turriff has the largest cluster of shops. It has a compact town centre with plenty of free parking, as well as an independently owned department store which even draws customers from the city. The county capital of Banff also has a good selection of shops to choose from, but even in the smallest of villages there are often little gems to be found from seaside galleries to secluded pottery studios.
The area is a haven for artists, crafters and makers; so, if you are looking to pick up a unique and individual memento from your time on The Banffshire Coast, you will be spoiled for choice. Paper sculptors, artisan food makers, jewellers and soap makers – you name it, we have it. While many artists have outlets in our towns, others have studios that are tucked away off the beaten track - and are happy to have visitors watch them at work. As well as watching them at work, some of our makers offer short courses in their chosen craft so you can learn a new skill too. What better souvenir than one you have made yourself?
You’ll find a particularly high concentration of galleries and studios in Gardenstown and the surrounding area, but for the best spots, why not take a look at our Shopping Trail - which will introduce you to the artists and their work, and will tell you where to find them so you can plan a whole day of retail therapy!
Hardly a weekend goes by without a craft fair or art exhibition taking place but for a truly unique experience, visit the annual COAST Festival which celebrates the arts in all forms. You’ll be able to find out information about the event, which takes place in Banff and Macduff in May, on the website www.coastfestival.org.uk
Antiques and collectibles is another of our specialities. Indeed, they are so popular that several of our local stores have appeared on the growing number of antiques entertainment shows that are screened regularly on television. Cullen in particular has a large number of outlets for antiques and curios, so this should certainly feature on your hit list if you are looking for something truly unique.
